Beautiful and Green (Ode to Florida)

(A song)

Why don’t we get in the car,
Drive maybe half an hour
When we get out
We’ll be in paradise

I don’t know where we’re going
But I know when we get out
Whatever’s there
Will be paradise

There’s a traffic jam on ’95,
So let’s take the Turnpike
Wait
The Turnpike’s backed up too

You know, it could be just as well
Now we can set up camp
In the front yard
With a blanket or two

‘Cause crab grass is the only grass we know
Our lawn is beautiful
Our lawn is beautiful and green
(2 measures)
Our world is beautiful
Our world is beautiful and green

The fridge is empty
I guess we should go shopping
Publix
Where shopping is a pleasure

Maybe the one by Sawgrass Mall
Maybe Weston Town Center
It doesn’t matter
Shopping is a pleasure

Flying down State Road 84
And the New River Canal
Watch out for Gators
And Hurricanes and ‘Noles

I look to you
You look to me
We smile
This place does something to our soul

And crab grass is the only grass we know
Our lawns are beautiful
Our lawns are beautiful and green
(2 measures)
Our world is beautiful
Our world is beautiful and green

Why don’t we get in the car,
Drive maybe half an hour
When we get out
We’ll be in paradise

Between the Everglades and the Keys
And the best beach in the world
And Lake Okeechobee
You’ll find your paradise

From Metro Zoo to Lion Country
From Key West up to Loxahatchee
It’s everything
It’s impossible to name

From Palm Beach down to Boca
From Lauderdale to Aventura
To Miami
Everyone’s just the same

‘Cause crab grass is the only grass we know
Our lawns are beautiful
Our lawns are beautiful and green
(2 measures)
Our world is beautiful
Our world is beautiful and green

Now you need to post a musical version of this… that is, I want a tune to go with it!

  2. Wafna says:

I might argue about it being impossible to tame, but that’s based in growing up in Canada, and only having spent 3 days around Jacksonville.

  3. fishamaphone says:

@Tam: It definitely needs music, but 1:00 in the morning is not the time to figure out how to do that. This is a piano song not a guitar song, though, so a capella’s my best bet.

@Waf: I wrote this mostly while walking from place to place over the last three days. I’m definitely open to tweaking, particularly in the third section, and the “impossible to tame” line is my least favorite in the whole piece. So it may find itself cut at some point in the near future :-p

I can help on the piano side if you need it…
